Michelle Lisa Herman and Sarah McGavran
Artist Michelle Lisa Herman’s multidisciplinary practice is informed by theoretical and philosophical research, feminist and disability politics, comedy, and conceptualism. Herman’s installations, sculpture, and videos investigate the boundaries between ability and what lies beyond reach, focusing specifically on the limits of perception, attention, connection, and categorisation in the digital age. Herman has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at Hillyer Art Space (Washington, DC, 2016), the Arlington Arts Center (Arlington, Virginia, 2017), VisArts (Rockville, Maryland, 2021, 2018), the Washington Project for the Arts (Washington, DC, 2015), the Corcoran Gallery of Art (2010), the Smithsonian Institution (2019, 2017, 2010, 2009), and the Kennedy Center (2008). Herman’s work has been written about in Hyperallergic, New American Paintings, the Washington Post, NPR, and East City Art. Herman holds both an MFA (2020) and BFA (2008) from the Maryland Institute College of Art. michellehermanart@gmail.com @michellelisaherman ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
